Honda has been bitten by the recall bug that has plagued Toyota in recent months.

Today Honda issued a voluntary recall for 344,000 Honda Odyssey minivans, and 68,000 Honda Element vehicles from the 2007 and 2008 model year. The recall is due to a soft brake pedal requiring extra effort to stop the vehicles. While this recall seems precautionary, any brake performance issue is a safety concern.

Once parts are available in late-April, Honda dealers will cap and seal the part in the braking system that allows air to slowly build and cause the soft pedal.

Hopefully Honda has learned from the huge public relations debacle that Toyota made over their major recalls.

Honda set up a website at http://www.recalls.honda.com which directs you to the Honda Owners Link. You can put in your VIN number to see if it is the subject of this recall. This is what you see when you click on the Honda Recall Website:

Last month, Toyota issued safety recalls for a number of their very popular vehicle lineup. As General Motors and Ford position their dealers to take advantage of Toyota’s weak response, Honda dealers should benefit from this as well. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, Honda may be your best choice. Sales were off in the US for Honda by 6% last month. Honda should be motivated to improve on those numbers. If you were in the market for an SUV or a Pickup, the Honda Ridgeline would be a fine choice. It is the perfect blend of utility and refinement for the average suburban homeowner. With the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot and other models, surely there is one to meet the needs of your family.

Every company faces challenges. But the true measure of a company is how they respond to adversity. First Toyota vehicles suffered from “Floor Mat Entrapment” and now that has been expanded to a full “Pedal” recall. The Pedal recall is very serious because the pedal is stuck in a partially depressed position.

Toyota Recall Models:

Vehicles affected by the “Pedal” recall:

Certain 2009-2010 RAV4

Certain 2009-2010 Corolla

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

Certain 2007-2010 Camry

Certain 2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

Vehicles affected by the 2009 floor mat recall include:

2005-2010 Avalon

2007-2010 Camry

2009-2010 Corolla

2008-2010 Highlander

2009-2010 Matrix

2004-2009 Prius

2005-2010 Tacoma

2007-2010 Tundra

2009-2010 VENZA

Toyota has created a website to deal with the recalls. This website provides complete information on the Toyota Recall.

http://www.toyota.com/recall/

It is still too early to tell what the fallout will be from their perceived denial and slow response on such a huge safety concern. My personal opinion is that they will (finally) confront this issue, repair their customer’s vehicles, and continue to be the #1 car maker in the world.

What do you think?

Drive safely!
